2003 Mitsubishi L200 severe top end knocking noise

Car: Mitsubishi L200
Year: 2003
Variant: Warrior 2.5 turbo
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi there I wonder if anyone can help me.. Last night when driving my truck home I was doing around 30mph then all of a sudden the gear lever shot into neutral and the engine started to make a terrible banging/clashing noise it sounds like it's coming from the top end. I lost all power/drive but the engine carried on ticking over as normal.. At first I thought maybe the clutch had disintegrated being that the transition went to neutral. But I had a new clutch fitted 6months ago with only 5k miles on it plus I don't pull any weight other than a couple of bags of sand.. I was eventually recovered and taken to a garage.. My mechanic is unsure at the moment what it could be.. At first he thought it might of been the dual mass fly wheel because he said the clutch pedal was pulsating a bit like a heart beat, but according to the firm that replaced the clutch (planet clutch) assured me it doesn't have one.. So the
Only other things I can think of is the big end going which I can't bare think about or maybe balancing belt slipping or breaking.. He only started to investigate it an hour ago so can't see a result anytime soon.. If anyone's got any clues to point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.
Cheers!!

If your engine is ticking over with no drive I'd say its clutch related or gearbox related, if it starts the flywheel is ok
for the box to jump to neutral there is nothing the engine would do which could possibly do this, could be input shaft failure.
Hope its gearbox not engine for you mate anyway

Plz keep us informed

Hi mate many thanks for that I'll def keep you informed.. Regarding the box I can still still go through the gears with ease and the clutch pedal still feels ok to be honest. When the rac rescued me he was certain it wasn't clutch related because the noise is more top than bottom engine.. Hopefully by 2moro I'll have a bit more info on it I just hate the waiting game ha ha . Thanks again!!

Ok, really strange, its hard to try and diagnose over the net with just a description but how an engine fault can put the gearbox into neutral is confusing.
Especially if the clutch and gears feel ok now
Good luck mate

Does it drive? I mean will the gears engage and move the vehicle?

Hi mate

It's moves but only slightly there isn't even enough power to get it over a speed bump.. I can still go through the gears.. I've just returned from the garage and they have ruled out gear box, clutch etc they are saying its a suspected con rod failure.. My mechanic said it sounds like a hammer spinning round in metal bucket.. As you can guess I didn't find it v funny :-(

Hi there
Got my truck bck eventually after a full engine rebuiled.it turns out it was the crank shaft/bolts that had snapped. So 1300 quid later I'm bck on the road :-)
Thanks for the help mate..
