2004 Mitsubishi L200 30 amp pal fuse blowing

Car: Mitsubishi L200

30amp PAL fuse for my lights blew the other day so I replaced fuse. Lights came on/off fine but when i switched ignition on the fuse blew. I have been driving thru lots of puddles the last week.

Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong???

You have a dead short there ,do not fit another fuse, you need to put a test light across the fuse position and try and locate the issue.

Ok would that be so even if they work without the ignition on? The other thing is that the original fuse that blew someone had put a 60amp instead of a 30amp could there be an underlying problem??

Possible there,s been an issue there previously if some ones upped the fuse rating, connect a test light across the fuse if it light,s then there,s a short to ground,Then isolate thing,s on that circuit or remove other fuses noting there position till light is out,If this does not work then possibly a short inside a component, and are there any other thing,s you have noticed that do not work as that would be a good start to solving this.If unsure you may need to seek a auto electrician to solve this issue as it will only get worse.

seems like a short to positive if you blowing a fuse. And the positive you are shorting to only becomes positive when the ignition is switched on so its not a constant live. Do the lights, or a single light, light up even slightly with the ignition on and light switch off?

Hi the lights blow the sec the ignition is switched on but work fine without ignition on. All other lights ie indicators and brake lights work fine.

Problems like this are a little tricky. U seem to be gaining a short to ground thru another circuits positive wire. If it was a short to ground on its own circuit it would be doing it every time u switch on the lights even with ignition off, similarly if it was shorting through another circuits ground wire it would also short all the time. I looked autodata but no mitsubishi wiring diagrams there. Make sure fuse box good and dry anyway. If it is theres a good chance you have wires touching within a loom. Its just finding it after that which is the tricky part! But not impossible. I would advise an auto electricians help on this one.

If you have towing socket check that by disconnecting it in case water causing issue in it,it,s a common one overlooked.

I suspect bustedknuckles is correct with the towbar socket fault

Hi all
Thanks for all your suggestions. Turned out to be damaged wiring to the alternator shorting out. Took mechanic a couple of hours to locate rewire and check so didn't work out to costly either.
