4wd won't work.

the 4wd stick moves in the box into each place and the light appears, but it sometimes throws it back and makes a metal on metal noise. I have to hold it in place for it to stay in 4wd.
someone told me it's to do with the top of the box getting dirt in and corroding, stopping it from probably going in to place. Has this problem happened to anyone else, and how was is solved?

If it's jumping out of 4 it must be a transfer box problem. Most Jeeps have the transfer box connected to the main gearbox. Unfortunately sou D's lines full gbox change
