I find the steering in my 04 mini one quite heavy, is this normal?

with the engine running turn the steering wheel side to side you should hear a wine from the lower columb.there is a common fault for the electronic power steering motor to fail.

Common problem with the power steering pump failing. especially on earlier models. Look here ,
