2006 Mini Cooper advice on servicing

Car: Mini Cooper
Year: 2006
Categories: Electrics, ECU, Warnings & Lights
I have had my mini since new and always thought that servicing was a certain mileage (9000) or 12 mths which ever is sooner. However my friend who also has a mini says that she couldn't take her mini in ti the BMW garage for a service until the onboard computer said that it was due a service. My car has 5000 until a service according to the OBC but has gone over the 12 months as I do not put alot of miles on it as work is only a couple of miles away. So what should I do??? Go with the OBC or length of time?

Different opinions re. servicing by OBC or otherwise i.e

The Service Interval Indicator looks at many different factors in determining the next interval. These include, at the least, average speed, average rpm, maximum rpm, engine hours, time (as in how long the car has been sitting without driving it) etc. For people who drive smoothly, and mostly highway, you'll definitely see higher service intervals. A car that spends more time in 1st and 2nd gear at lower speeds or idle will probably see short intervals. So yes, 18,000 miles to the next service is normal. That said, most mechanics I have talked to recommend changing the oil every 5000 - 8000 miles.
