Advice please (no problems purchase advice)

Hi I have posted a few issues on here and have always had great advice back. So I thought I would ask you for advice on what could be a new purchase as I'm hearing different things from different people.
My trusty 206 has reached the end and now with a low ish budget (2300) I've been looking for a run around, we have a newish family car.
Been to see a 1.6 chilli pack mini Cooper 86k on the clock and timing chain changed approx a year ago, part service history. But after speaking with a local mechanic he said he would not buy a 2007 age range mini as they have major gear box issues bit like Russian roulette. Could anyone on here advise whether they would agree with that point or not.
