Head gasket change?

You don't replace head gasket til it fails . It's not a service item that should be replaced at a certain mileage / time like cambelt .They up rated the head gasket on the k series engines round about 2004 because of problems so your car should have modified gasket fitted .Sounds like they are using this to try and drive trade in price down . It was a very common fault on those engines but you don't go fitting parts that might fail until they are needed .

The HG weakness is mainly on the 1.6 and 1.8 variants as they have larger bores and the HG was originally designed for the 1.4 (smaller bores). What size engine do you have?

Having said this, it doesn't mean it's going to fail. The reputation and hear-say has made this into such a massive thing. It's only a small percentage of engines which suffer faliures, it's just you always hear about the times when it does fail so it makes it seem worse.
