2002 MG ZR no power to dashboard / delay of 6-7 minutes before power comes on

Car: MG ZR
Year: 2002
Variant: 1.8 160
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi guys

I have a problem with my MG ZR 160 1.8.

When I turn the ignition key there is no power to the dashboard, and when I start the car nothing happens. When I leave the ignition key on 3rd position (final position before starting the car) and wait for a while (the last time i timed it, it was about 7 minutes) the power comes to the dashboard automaticaly, and no problems starting the car.

So I drive around abit, stop the car same thing happens but it takes less time for the power to come to the dashboard. Sometimes it picks up as normal.

I'm an expert in computers and programming but with cars I'm just like a baby trying to learn the first words :(

Could be fault on instrument cluster itself . Might be worth checking connection to unit at rear .

Thank you whittingehame for your post.

For anyone else having a similar problem:

I've taken the car to a normal garage and they have identified the immobiliser as the cause. It was not working properly thus no power to the dashboard, no power to the mileage screen. It's been fixed now and they had to call in an electrician, well thats what I've been told. It didn't cost too much about £60, so I'm happy.

I want to sell this car and buy a Renault Clio 1.5 dci as I want something smaller and more economical. Do you guys recommend something better, or Clio is decent enough. My budget is £2500, maybe £3000 if it's worth it.
