2002 MG ZR engine judder

when driving, engine judders as if going to stall then engine management light flashes for a few seconds then stops but stays on car runs ok for a few miles then happans again.can anyone advise me what to do

if engine lamp comes on code should be stored in ecu get them read at any good garage if no codes stored could be crank angle sensor as this doesnt always store a code.be craefull not to damage cat
