2004 MG ZR backfire from exhaust and whining from engine, but cat drives well

Car: MG ZR
Year: 2004
Variant: 1.4
Categories: Leaks & Noises
My exhaust use to back fire when I was low on fuel and pulled away on a hill, however it doesnt as much when I fill up. I still don't feel like the exhaust is healthy, should I get it checked out?

And I recently noticed a small whining noise when I drive the car, usually when I accelerate, but then I hardly notice it because I have a loud exhaust. I have searched what it could be and people say it could be the alternator?

Would be glad if some could give me advice

Back fires in the exhaust manifold can be caused by a leaking exhaust manifold gasket.
air get drawn in and mixes with hot exhaust gases and ignites.
An exhaust pressure test would be good,
if you can find a mechanic with a pressure gauge tester these days,
It's a bit old school.
As to the whine,
remove the alternator belt and fire it up,
Is the whine gone?
then it is something rotational driven by the belt.
If the whine is still there it's further in.
