1999 Mercedes Benz C Class vehicle noise

When either parked and/or driving the vehicle has intermittently emitted a high pitched whistling/screeching noise. Recently the sound has occurred whilst the vehicle is stationery with engine off in the garage and has stopped when I have started the engine.

Only thing I can think of would be a resrtiction on exhaust somewhere but would have thought there would be a drop on engine performance .
