i have had this problem for about a week now as I'm driving along the speedo suddenly drops to 0 and the engine wont change gear so I have to stop and restart it and then it goes again for a while and happens again. I was told it might be a sensor but wouldn't know where to start!

Check the plug at transmission , but could be speed sensor .Better to get it scanned rather than guess .

where would I find the speed sensor please?

It varies from year to year , different models / transmissions , so cant say for sure .On some the speed sensor is part of the conductor plate inside the transmission , others from a front wheel and some from the diff .
