Starting problems

2002 Mercedes Benz C Class 270cdi
Car: Mercedes Benz C Class
Year: 2002
Variant: 270cdi
Categories: Electrics, ECU, Warnings & Lights
All lights etc came on, and appeared normal, but engine wouldn't crank over. Charged battery, all ok for a few days, then same problem occurred. Happened a few times so replaced battery as it was 12 years old. All ok for a few weeks, then problem reoccurred.
Charged the battery, and it started ok. All the time, no indication of failed charging circuit or lights or other services staying on when car left for a while.
Anyone got anyideas?

I'd do an ampere drain test on the system.
simple test an ammeter is connected in series between the disconnected battery negative clamp and the battery negative terminal and the amp draw read.
Last one I did drew 1.9 amps when off,
Enough to flatten the battery enough in two days.
