2002 Mercedes Benz C Class remote key fob not working

Car: Mercedes Benz C Class
Year: 2002
Variant: C200K
Categories: Electrics, ECU, Warnings & Lights
I returned to the car yesterday and the remote key fob would not open the doors. I used the metal slide out section of the key to open the driver's door (but it didn't open the rest). This set off the alarm which stopped after about 20 seconds. I then tried to use the key fob to start the car but this would not work.

My wife brought me the spare key fob, but this would work either. As a result I have had to abandon the car where it was parked. I would like to know what this problem is likely to be and approximately how much it is likely to cost to repair.

Thanks
