Hand brake ajustment

2002 Jaguar X-Type 2.5 auto petrol

I have a Jaguar x type 52 plate 2002 and the hand brake lever comes right up almost virtical and just about holds the car in neutral but not in drive, i have had it up in the air and there is no ajustment along the cable or at the hubs, when i look down through the lever gaiter i can see that the cable is not moving until the lever is over half way up, i'm wondering if its a problem with the lever mechanism, if so is it a hard job to change ? any one had the same problem or know an easy fix !!!

As this car is based on the mondeo, I suspect that it use's a similar system. You will need to replace both cables and the handbrake lever.

before you do any of the other things mentioned im sure if you removed the rear wheels there will be some adjustments in the drum brakes im assuming you have drum brakes on the rear if not also check the pads or shoes as if these are warn down then that would be a reason for the hand brake lever coming up so high and replace as required

Thanks for that but it is discs on the rear and they are new pads, there is no adjustment at the wheels or along the cables or at the lever !!!!

Have you checked the h/brake levers at callipers are free ? If seized and not pulling back could be your problem .Are you sure there is no adjustment nut directly below h/ brake lever ? got to get under car to get access to it .Also check cables are free and not seized . If that is not prob , go here ,

and you will get someone who knows what they are talking about to advise you .

Hi

I have the same car and had the same problem.
I resolved the problem by replacing the handbrake cable which had seized.
The cable that I replaced was at the rear of the car going to the near side. I did not have to replace both of the cables.

Hi, anyone who has an X type Jaguar will at some time have problems with the brake calipers, they are very easy to remove, jack the car up and using axles stands make sure it is firmly secured, chock the front or rear wheel which ever one you are working on to make sure the car will not move, remove the wheel, look at the rear of the caliper, you will see a small bolt, there is another one lower down, they are on the end of the two pins which secure the hydraulic section to the brake carrier, undo these and that section will prise off the carrier, then secure it to make sure the hydraulic hose is not put under strain, look at the rear and you will see two larger bolts which secure the brake carrier to the car, remove them and the carrier will come off, check the two pins to see if they have seized inside the body, if they have it is always best to order a new set which will come with silicon grease, the grease is for the pins only and not for anything else, there will be two new gaiters which fit into the body and onto the top of each pin, refit in the reverse order, hand brake cable might need adjusting, underneath the car approximately in the middle you will see a cable equalizer plate, all three cables fit onto it, one in the centre is the hand brake cable, it has a threaded part which has a nut on it, adjust this nut to the rear of the car while checking the rear wheel turns freely, do not over tighten it because the pads will become unable to release from the disc, wheel should turn ,job done, good luck

Hi Gary... I have an X - Type, 2002 Jag 2.5 ( which is actually my wife's car.and doesn't get used much; is in our garage most of the time... ) anyway, since we bought the car about 5 years ago, 2013 it had a few mechanical issues but the body and interior is in great condition... I have been tweeking the car so that it is all good again ) the hand brake has been a real problem as I have had the car to many brake specialists, mechanics and everyone except the Lord Mayor... I have been quoted up to $800 to get it going... however, a no cost SOLUTION; I came across a post that said pull up the hand brake gaiter from under the lever ( you don't need to take it off just the front end ) and underneath there is a solenoid with an adjustable screw which can be easily seen... no adjustment to the screw needed... get some WD40 spray and spray the whole mechanism liberally then pull the H/brake lever up and down a dozen times... mine works great now and now the lever only comes up about a quarter of the stroke when you pull up the lever... I hope this helps you and others... good luck with it.
