rear lights work, rear brake lights work, but when press the brake pedal with both on they go out, lift the brake pedal the rear lights come back on.I had a tow bar fitted julyish time last year and they were working fine till approx a week ago

Can be caused by a bad earth .

check towbar socket to make sure there is no water in there

Possible back feed through your towing harness ,brake light circuit,check for water and broken chaffed wiring.
