Knocking

2001 Honda CR-V

Knocking from under the car sounds like its coming from rear of car. Had all new bushes fitted. Knocking worse when driving slowly. Honda garage was not sure what it was. The noise will disappear for months at a time, normally when it has had work done on the car and been lifted on the ramp!

Does the CR-V have switchable 4 wheel drive? Does it make a noise when it is switched between 2wd and 4wd?

I would suggest from what you are saying that you have worn anti-roll bar links, as when a vehicle is lifted up on on a lift it is quite often the only time the suspension drops to it's full travel and unsettle's things. Once on a lift 4WD steering and suspension joints are under quite alot of load and can be quite awkward to find until they ware to a point that is obvious.

the problem i think u may have is the differential breather tube is upswept and allows moisture in to the oil, when i worked at honda we would flush the diff out with dual pump fluid 3 times each taking a litre a time,i would suggest driving the vehicle until the oil heats up then drain and change repeating this cycle 3 times until u are on ur final litre of dpf, this was very common when i worked there and was allways a successful procedure!
