when starting from cold and this morning took about 9 tries to get it started then it was fine for the rest of the day

When was car last serviced and the likes of plugs checked ? Many possible causes , see how it goes next time from cold , may have been a one off. If not get back to board for info / help .

Just had a service in June and have had it done every year

If it's only doing it at cold start , could be engine coolant temp sensor . But see how it goes . You may have to get a diagnostic scan check if it persists .Also depends on what service and parts were fitted as some do very little , basically only levels , tyre checks etc .Also depends if it's to dealer servicing recommendations and also mileage on car .

prior to starting had it been on a short run or stop started on the drive if so this will be the cause

Car started first time yesterday but really shuddered and rattled

Chap from garage came and started it up thinks head gasket is going back to garage tomorrow
