2004 Ford KA whining noise and knocking

I have had my KA since new and have kept it serviced etc.
Over the last few months I have noticed that often when I start my car a whining noise starts up - it almost seems to be coming from the steering column but I had the windows down the other day and noticed that I could hear it louder - so maybe it's coming from the engine?
When I put the clutch down the whining stops until I take my foot back off again. Also it doesn't seem to be quite as bad in high gears and sometimes turning the steering wheel clockwise starts it off.
As well as this I have a knocking sound coming from the front right of the car. The body work had popped out slightly there so I thought it was just this. However I had this fixed the other day and it still seems to be doing it.
Please help if you can! I don't know much about cars!

Whininig noise could be from PAS (power assist steering ) Knock from front will have to be checked out as you can't take any chances with steering / suspension .

Hi I have had a KA since new and it has recently developed the knocking noise on front right hand side...has been in to ATS..and manager there says...he used to work on KA'S at ford..and they are prone to this "knocking noise"..he has explained what it is ...it is like a "ball bearing that is sitting in a grease sealed unit"..he said he knew straight away what it was...he explained in laymans!that when you brake the car body moves faster than this ball bearing thing!hence the knocking..he said "live with it "not dangerous...and costs at least £80 to fix ..mine is even more noticable when wet ..he said...it will be due to the grease and the wet...but again said ..it is not dangerous
