Ok battery warning light came on about 2 weeks ago, took out the battery and noticed that some of the cells were low, topped up with de-ionised water and recharged. Put back in and the light went off but then came back on about 30 secs later, as I needed car for work I've had to use it and charge up battery about every 3 or 4 days but haven't had to add any more de-ionised water. Anyway yesterday leaving work I noticed after about half a mile that the battery light had not come on, stuck on headlights, rear demister etc but it stayed off, got home and checked voltage, it was sitting at 14.5v with the engine idling, stuck on the headlights etc and it went up a little. Now this morning it was still off until I went about 200 yrds and it came back on all the way to work. Not sure if it's the battery that's on the way out or the alternator, any suggestions?

sounds like you need to change your battery,if the problem persists then change your alternator.

First of all ,get battery tested . If any weak/dud cells it wont hold a charge and alternator will be working over time trying to keep up .With the alternator charging at 14.5v at idle , it is indicitive of a very low battery , far to high . Then , if battery not dud , get alternator tested . Obviously it is charging if at 14.5 v at idle , but it could be breaking down under load . Sometimes you do get faults with wiring / socket at alternator which can cause this . Any fast fit centre or accessory shop will test battery and alternator FOC while you wait .

check the wiring on multiplug as wire breaks on the back of the plug where wires go in you will find the wire has corroded
