1998 Ford KA head gasket, engine cooked?

Car: Ford KA
Year: 1998
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
driving down the motorway i suddenly hear a thumping sound when i put my foot down, after about 3 mins of this i lost all power and pulled over. loads of steam poured out of the car and water poured out all over the floor, the engine from this point would try to turn over but not start. AA mecanic that recovered the car said the head gasket had gone and the engine was cooked. Just wondered how much it would cost to fix. the car only cost me £600.

diy about £50 inc new oil etc
garage about £300 at best shop around you could pay a lot more
note due to scrapage there are a lot of ka s in scrap yards so you could prob pick up a complete engine cheeply just watch the labour to fit
