2003 Ford KA overheating

my ford ka ,overheats , & the fan kicks in ,within 10mins of driving.
i fear this may be a blown head gasket as i ran the car on idel without the header cap on & the water bubbled over & out.
any info would help.
temperature light does not light up ,on the dash.

I suppose the first thing I suspect is the thermostat,
If it's jammed shut the engine will overheat in short order.
