Could be heater control valve or more likely heater matrix / core that was leaking ?

If it is the heater control valve , it's a minor job .Make sure he refills cooling system with antifreeze as winter approaches .The light could be on if coolant level low .Check rad / coolant level when engine cooled down and top up if needed .Also get it checked to make sure engine not overheating after replacing faulty part .

By joining the two hoses together , he has bypassed the heater .But as stated simple job to replace heater control valve .As long as no other damage caused by running car with low water level and boiling .
