Car starts alright but is then like a kangaroo (shuddering) until it warms up

Check / replace the engine coolant temp sensor which gives a reading to the ECU for cold start .

Can't get it checked out till after Christmas will it do any damage if I drive it

If you can get by without it do so as such a fault could destroy your catayst
