2004 Ford KA power assisted steering suddenly not working

Car: Ford KA
Year: 2004
Variant: 1.3
Categories: Steering, Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres
Last night whilst trying to park my car, my power steering suddenly went. It is now very intermittent and will cut in and out several times between locks. I have not had any problems with the steering until now.

All the chatroom threads I have read suggest the steering rack is gone. But I thought something like the steering rack would wear slowly and there would be signs of it wearing.

However my steering went mid lock.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. The last thing I need at the moment is to have to pay for a new steering rack, by the sounds of things it is very expensive.

More likely to be PAS pump . Get a garage you can trust to check PAS oil level .

would this be something I could do myself or do I definitely need to take it to a garage.I have been ripped off before by mechanics in the Reading area. Hence don't have any garage I can trust to tell the truth.

Thanks for you help

If it is the pump , not a major job . Could also check the steering column intermediate shaft universal joint at the bottom of the column as this is gives problems also .But check fluid level first , may just need topped up .

Check this ,
