2000 Ford Galaxy no gears

Car: Ford Galaxy
Year: 2000
Variant: 1.9
Categories: Steering, Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres
have got a problem I was driving normaly when I stopped and tried to pull off there is no gear i.e no gear will work. the gear shifter is loose i.e. very soft and goes anywhere.
the clutch seems to be as normal as it was. besides this the tryres do not move even if no handbrake is applied. if you bush or otherwise all tyres dont not move.
a RAC guy came to me and tried to adjust cables and some other things but he said it is the gearbox which is gone could it be the problem?
if yes could anyone help me give me a tip of how to get a cheap gearbox.
plse help many thanks.

when the rac came out,did they check that the cables were`nt broken or stretched and that they were fitted prorperly, are you able to select gears on the shift mechanism on the gearbox?if so then get new cables,if you can`t select gears on the shift mechanism i`m afraid its a new gearbox.check around your local car breakers and online for a box,as for rear brakes, check the handbrake cables are not siezed and that the handbrake lever on the rear calipers is not siezed

the RAC man was trying to fix if the problem is the cable or any other simple thing but after 1 and 30 min he concluded that it was a gear box.

the handbrake didnt work in the first place what else can make the car not move.

i dont know what u mean if I can change the gears in the mechanisim?

ANYWAY I DO thank you very much for your quick response and honest advise.

if the brakes are siezed on or wheel bearing is siezed this can cause car not to move, also if the car is stuck in gear it will not move,on top of the gearbox there is 2 metal arms that move to select the gears, check that these can select a gear and are not stuck

If as you say , h/brake was knackered beforehand , every chance that's why car wont move .Check Yellow Pages for s/hand , recon gearbox specialists and contact for second opinion or price for replacement box if needed.

dont automatically think that it is a gearbox fault if it feels like the gearstick feels o.k etc,you may find that it is a clutch or flywheel fault,i had one 4 weeks ago drove it to shop no problems come out of shop lost drive completly, flywheel had broke up and was just rotating so had no drive
