Car not starting

Had problems with fuel gage and low fuel warnings when there was at least half the tank of diesel in then it stopped working completely. This caused me to run out of diesel a couple of times (gage was stuck on nearly full this time). After running out of diesel third time I cannot start the engine even though I almost filled the tank now. Engine ticks over and sometimes it will start but then cuts out after a few seconds.
