Poor fuel consumption

1996 Ford Galaxy 2.0
Car: Ford Galaxy
Year: 1996
Variant: 2.0
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Recently my car has been a pain...poor acceleration through 2.5-3.25k revs, i remedied this with a new lambda sensor, however since then my fuel consumption is outrageous, poor idling often cutting out at lights/junctions. When driving engine feels like it's 'backing up' with gasses...i floor the clutch and rev the engine, black smoke bellows out the exhaust! I have removed and cleaned the idle air control sensor...spark plugs seem to fire (though i havent removed and checked them, engine seems a little rough when driving.i have a haynes manual but no idea where else to start. Any suggestions??

Try unplugging the air flow meter, when the engine is off,
and then start it up,
run better?
If not then get it scanned for live data.

Not 100% sure of that year / model , but if timing belt fitted and not been replaced for a while , might be worth checking in case worn and jumped .Could also consider checking exhaust and cat may be partially plugged .

not sure on that age of car whether there are additional butterflys in the intake manifold. These(if fitted) can break up but are controlled by an actuator that requires vacuum to operate them. If vacuum is lost then they wont open so will in theory cause rich running, Might be worth a look
