2003 Ford Galaxy poor on power sometimes,

Quite often when the vehicle is started from cold it appears to be very weak in power and will often struggle up hills. even if it has run for about 10 mins.
Other days it is fine and has good pulling power ? Can anyone help.
Also it does have other gears shown in the automatic gear ghange area, we dont have a owners manual, can anyone tell me what these are for, Thank you. Zwack

change the diesel filter first
