Occasional engine stutter (pinking)

On 400mile round trip car had occasional 'pink' on way. On return journey this was more frequent leading to engine malfunction warning.RAC could find nothing on his diagnostic computer. He changed fuel filter, car started and got us home but the 'pinking' still occurring getting more frequent as we neared home.Have be told by mate it could be the cheap supermarket fuel we have been using.Any ideas or help anyone?

Does sound like contaminated fuel. This would bring the engine management light on when any contaminated fuel passes through the system. To eliminate this, you need to drain and clean the fuel system, also replacing the fuel filter again...
