Gear Linkage problem

1997 Ford Galaxy
Car: Ford Galaxy

Hello

Ok this is hard to explain but will try my best. Im having problems with my gears. The gear stick is very loose. It seems that if you select 1st, 3rd or 5th gear then the car drives in 3rd geard and if you select 2nd, 4th or reverse it is driving as in 4th gear. The gear stick is very very loose when in use and can be moved. The car is stalling when trying to drive in 1st as its not registering its first. It has "clicked" back into place and worked breifly but soon the fault returned. I have a Ford Galaxy N reg 2.0 litre car.

I have spokem to a few garages and they have all said gear linkage. Is it possible for us to repair this at home and if so how do we do it? It was working fine and suddenly stopped.

The best thing to do is look into the engine bay where the gearbox is and get someone else to work the gears if its not completely obvious i would image you will be able to work out whats wrong from there

It does sound like you have a problem with the gear linkage. You would need to get under the car to find out if there is anything that has come loose or if it needs replacing...
