2005 Ford Fiesta poor fuel consumption

Car: Ford Fiesta
Year: 2005
Variant: 1.6 flex
Categories: Engine & Drivetrain
My fuel consumption is very poor, 16.5 mpg ! I have changed the plugs and the air filter, there is no obvious sign of petrol fumes.
The car ticks over smoothly, it runs well. I have been told to check the "Lambda" wherever that is ? can anyone help me please ??

the lambda sensor monitors the oxygen in the exhaust gasses, then relays this infomation to the ECU. If its not working correctly, the engine can overfuel and cause your syptoms. its possible that this is the case, but have it plugged in at a reputable garage because it could only just be an air leak or dirty throttle body.

Seems strange that the idle and running are ok . To be getting that mpg the engine must be running far too rich and drinking petrol .How are you working out your mileage ?
