the battery light comes on (which I replaced last month)
then all the other lights come on, then they all go off apart from the airbag light
then everything stops working such as the power steering, indicators, speedometer, really just everything apart from the engine

This is going to sound a bit silly but have you tried thumping the top of the speedo/dash?
Fords have a reputation for the connectors at the rear dash going bad.
And failing dash pods.

Test alternator output / charging rate .Not heard of any problems with the connection on dash with this model / year .

To be honest me neither BUT the warning lamps/speedo etc have me concerned about a can bus fault.
