Boot light not working

The luggage compartment (boot),light has stopped working.When I bought the car it was fine but this year it occasionally did not come on when I opened the boot. Now it has stopped working completely. I have put in a new bulb but no success.
When getting new brake pads fitte recently I spoke to the garage owner about it. He did not have time to look at it then but said he thought switch was incorporated in the boot opening mechanism (handle).
Has anyone had this problem and / or know how to fix it ?.

The garage owner was correct , the light is operated by a micro switch on the boot lid lock assembly .
