there will be a code registered in the transmission control unit ,get it read it will point you towards the fault

Sounds like the Vehicle Speed Sensor is stuffed, there is also a Turbine Speed Sensor, maybe that but i doubt it, does the speedo work? if it does then its TSS if it doesnt then its VSS but you can check with a fault code reader
