Engine Malfunction

Last week as I was joining the motorway & accelerated to get up to motorway speed my car spat out a load of black from the exhaust, engine malfunction came up on the dash & I had nothing from the accelerator. Car was limping at around 10mph & I got onto the hard shoulder & called recovery. Car taken to garage who put it on diagnostic which showed nothing wrong. On bringing car back to local garage put foot down to accelerate from busy junction & did it again, switched off & re-started again & car is driving fine, again diagnostic showing nothing wrong with car. Any ideas what's going on? Is the turbo on the way out, it was as though the turbo had gone as I had no power or acceleration? Is it an electrical fault of sensor? Help!!!

Should normally be a stored fault code which will show on proper diagnostic equipment for Ford but not always . When was fuel filter last changed ?

Hi thanks for responding, it was first put on my local small garage diagnostic machine which showed no fault & then taken to be put on Ford diagnostic machine, which again showed no fault. I don't know when fuel filter was last changed, but can check if it has been done while I've had the car.

There are many other causes but if fault not there when checked and no fault code , really hard to diagnose .Service records should show when filter was last changed .
