1999 Fiat Punto a/c shutting off

Can anyone help. On turning the a/c knob on, instead of the blower and a/c working the dim lights come on!!! So instead of airconditioning I have dim lights?

Check all earths , especially the connection between engine/ gearbox and body.

Check the battery and body earths for good , clean , tight connections .
