2001 Fiat Punto engine cutting out

I was driving along and my car just cut out like it was out of petrol. When I tried to start it again I had trouble starting it. It eventually started but it won't keep going. There seems to be a fuel problem of some sort??

these cars do suffer with fuel pump problems,when you turn ignition on see if you can here pump priming you will here it under the rear seat
