2001 Fiat Punto exhaust emission control light

On my fiat punto 1.2 petrol 2001 the exhaust emission control light flashes whilst engine is running.My manual says there is a fault in the emission control system.Could somebody explain what could be wrong and is it expensive to repair.

Many possible causes , could be something minor . Rather than guess / replace parts , best to get a diagnostic scan which show fault codes .
