2001 Fiat Punto uncontrolled acceleration

Hi!
My car starts accelerating uncontrollably, but fortunately the engine only goes crazy while it is not in gear. But still it makes an awful sound, and I have to change to 1st gear to make it stop ( when I am waiting for green light f.i)
And when the car then is in 1st gear , but standing still, the engine almost dies. so I have to shift between the gear and the uncontrolled accelerating to keep the car going.
Does anyone know whats the source to this problem? And do you think it is difficult( and expensive) to fix it?

You dont say what engine in car ? Usually fault caused by idle stepper motor .You can try cleaning it and any tubes through the throttle body with carb cleaner.
