hey there my girlfriends car has suddenly just stop starting. when you turn the key it makes a loud whining noise almost like humming but fails to turn over aprecciate if anyone can give us any pointers. thanks

Sounds like starter pinion sticking and not engaging flywheel .

Just had a thought , is battery o.k ? If battery flat , might not be enough power to throw starter and engage / turn engine . Could try jump start and see what happens .
