when I am at idle if I turn on main beam lights the heater or the elec windows the engine coughs and some times cuts out.

Might be worthwhile getting alternator output tested as it seems to be when you draw an electrical load it causes fault .Simple 2 min. check , usually FOC at most garages / fast fit centres while you wait.
