2004 Fiat Punto car starts but engine cuts out when in drive

my car will start without any problems as soon as I put it into drive and take my foot off the brake the engine cuts out, but as soon as I put it in reverse it will drive and it keeps saying gearbox failure on dashboard. just hoping someone might know what the problem is

Sounds like a failed gearbox.
But I'd still get it scanned and checked over.
