I have a very strong smell of petrol inside the car to the point it's giving me headaches and I have to drive with the window open

I would not drive till cause is found, There could be a serious risk of fire/explosion if fuel becomes in contact with the exhaust system.
Check under car on road for signs of leaks
Are there any visible damp patches under bonnet around fuel filter etc.

This can be quite a serious problem, be safe and get it tested and do not drive until fixed
