Cooling fan

I have just changed the water pump and timing belt on a neighbour's Fiat Punto. everything was timed and fitted ok, but as soon as I swithch on the ignition the coolant fan comes on, why ? the engine hasn't even been running, thanks for any help.

check the connections to the temp sensor for the fan it could be shorting out or connected incorrectly
