1996 Citroen ZX makes a loud scraping noise when in fourth gear

My car runs fine until it reaches fourth gear and then makes this awful loud scraping noise, once it goes up to fourth gear, it then often continues to make the noise even in lower gears. The noise dissappears completely when the clutch is all the way in but the minute you take it out, it comes back. I'd really appreciate any help or ideas of what the problem could be...thanks

Sounds like either 4th gear in your gearbox needs replacing or there is a problem with the gear selector system. These repairs can be expensive. I'd recommend getting the problem diagnosed then depending on the result get yourself a second hand gearbox from a breakers yard and have it fitted by an independent garage - this will often work out way cheaper than a Citroen garage repair.

This could be as simple as just being a clutch release bearing but could also be a mainshaft bearing inside the gearbox, either way it's gearbox out and the release bearing can be felt for any roughness straight away, if it is the gearbox then i would get it repaired rather than get one from a breakers as they are not very good boxes anyway and you could be unlucky enough to get a bad one and the garage will probably charge you again to fit another.
