2002 Citroen Xsara Picasso clanking in low gear

Car: Citroen Xsara Picasso
Year: 2002
Variant: 1.6
Categories: Engine & Drivetrain
Please help! I have been to a couple of garages who look at me like I'm making this up!

When I am in low gear (pulling away etc) I get a metallic "clank" noise. Sounds like something should be pinned up but has come loose. It is underneath the car and towards the back. Because of the metallic sound I assumed it was something to do with the exhaust but I have taken it to two places who have said the exhaust is fine. It also does not happen all the time! One day it will be fine, next day it's clanking all the time! Just paid a load of money to replace one of the front susp. springs beause I was told it could be that, but no luck! Even when I ask a mech. to drive it for me to hear, they claim they can't hear anything! It's driving me mad!!!!!

Don't know why they replaced front spring if noise at rear .Normally only replace spring if it is broke or weak and you can see fault before fitting . Can understand why it's hard to diagnose if no one can hear noise .Can you not reproduce noise on road test with mechanic ?

you said the clanking noise comes the rear.try putting the car in reverse engine switched off and handbrake off.then put wheel brace on rear wheel nut and try to tighten and loosen the nut.this will show u if there is a bushing worn on the axle.

I don't have a solution, but don't worry, you're not going mad. My picasso developed exactly the same fault about 2weeks ago. I thought it was something the garage had done as I'd just had it MOT'd and the aircon re-gassed,but I've taken it backan the mechanics shake their heads and say there'snothing wrong. It doesn't happen everytime, but sounds almost like a metal plate has dropped down and is dragging on the floor or something.I can't see anything hanging down and it doesn't affect the driving.
If you find out what it is before me....let me know!

If the noise is like a mettalic squeek when pulling away or changing gear it could be where the exhaust joins the front pipe, on our picasso its just at the back of the engine, there are two spring like bolts joining the front pipe and exhaust together, inside the pipe is a metal gasket to seal the front pipe and exhaust, this wears over time and when the exhaust flexes makes a mettalic squeel like noise, this was the problem with our car so my local mechanic told me.

Hello. In the hope that you are still contactable, I wondered if you ever managed to solve the metal plate clanging noise as mine is doing exactly the same
Kind wishes, Dawn
