2008 Citroen C4 boot won't lock

My Wifes C4 Grand Picasso recently failed the MoT as the tailgate would not open.
I opened the boot from inside but then it would not shut. I have ordered a new switch for the handle but fear the non locking problem is located elswhere.
Any advice gratefully received.

May have to pull trim off and check lock assembly and linkage . Could be something minor sticking that WD40 would cure .

Just remembered the tailgate release latch assembly had a plastic part that sometimes broke also .

May be broken wiring to the lock motor ,check this first.
