2006 Citroen C4 starting problem

Car: Citroen C4
Year: 2006
Variant: 1.6 HDi SX
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
My 1.6 diesel car intermittently won't start - first manifested in v. cold weather in January but repeated 5 times since October. Battery sound and engine turns over well, but won't fire. Sometimes it seems to start when a trickle charger is connected to the battery (indicating 0 amp charging current!). Once it worked after disconnecting the battery to reset the ECU - I thought it was a communication problem affecting fuel flow.
