2003 Citroen C3 manual gearbox problem

Problem selecting 2nd and reverse gear, grinding when selecting, have to physically hold gear stick in to these gears, all others fine. Taken it to one garage so far, who initially said it was the selector cables, but then changed diagnosis to a full gearbox rebuild and clutch.
Noticed this very same problem was posted in 2013, so don't want to be ripped off!!

No mention of an oil change done.
that would be my first thought.
And though I would agree 2nd gear grunching is possibly the synchro,
But there is no syncro on reverse.
You ought to hear my local motor factors Peugeot 's gears complaining when they're reversing outside my doors!
For reverse try full depresing of the clutch,
lift of the depress again BEFORE stirring for reverse.
Old school called double clutching.
But it is possible the clutch is dragging.
that would be my first thought.

The problem was just the gear selector cables, £40 off eBay and £50 to fit, like having a brand new gear box now!
